Pedestrian Pushing Bike Killed in Winter Garden Crash

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on September 20, 2020

A fatal pedestrian accident is under investigation within the city of Winter Garden, say police working within the area. The incident in question took place early in September and involved a woman in her 60s as well as a vehicle that was not described in the initial reports.

The woman was on foot with a companion, and both of them were pushing bikes with small passenger trailers attached. It was as they reached the intersection of Colonial Drive and Hyde Park Circle that they decided to try and cross the street. The report did not mention anything about the intersection’s pedestrian safety areas such as crosswalks, and it is unclear if the pedestrians had the right of way at the time when they attempted to cross the street.

Still, pedestrians are far more vulnerable than vehicles and should receive plenty of space while traveling across the road.

The two made it across the eastern lanes of Colonial Drive and were crossing the western lanes when a vehicle approached. At this point, the reports make it clear that the pedestrians were not within a crosswalk.

The driver of the car either failed to notice the pedestrians or believed themselves to be far enough away for it to not be a problem. As a result, the car struck the woman while she was pushing her bike. The force of the crash knocked her to the ground and caused her to suffer from severe injuries. Emergency response crews were immediately called to the scene, and paramedics and EMTs both rushed to the area in order to treat the woman.

When they arrived, they found that the pedestrian’s injuries were fatal, and that there was nothing they could do for them. The woman was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the car also apparently suffered from minor injuries, and they were taken from the scene and to a nearby hospital. It is not clear what exactly their injuries consisted of, but it believed they were released from the emergency medical center shortly after they arrived.

The crash remains under investigation.
