Eight Nursing Home Residents Die at Hollywood Hills Rehab Facility
Tragedy struck a South Florida nursing home this week, where six residents at the Rehabilitation Center of Hollywood Hills have been reported dead, according to officials. A criminal investigation has since been launched in order to determine their cause of death in this terrible nursing home accident, but authorities believe it “may be related to the loss of power.”
Widespread power outages due to Hurricane Irma ravaged the coastal region this past weekend, with 12 million people still without power as of Tuesday.
With temperatures climbing into the upper 80’s and lower 90’s during the day, coupled with the fact that the facility was operating without air conditioning, it created a potentially deadly living environment for the elderly residents of the home. Florida’s Governor Rick Scott weighed in on the situation, stating that “Although the details of these reported deaths are still under investigation, this situation is unfathomable. Every facility that is charged with caring for patients must take every action and precaution to keep their patients safe — especially patients that are in poor health. I am going to aggressively demand answers on how this tragic event took place.”
Since the incident, 115 residents have been evacuated from the nursing home to nearby hospitals, with many of them requiring medical attention for heat-related issues, including dehydration and respiratory distress. According to documents released to the press, this particular nursing home facility had incurred previous citations in 2014 & 2016 for not following generator regulations. The safety violations had been rectified prior to this incident.
A hotline has since been set up for the families and friends of loved ones residing at the rehabilitation center in question. For additional information, please call 954-265-3000.
