U.S. 441 Crash Kills Motorcyclist in Orange County
A collision that happened within Orange County during the middle of this month resulted in the death of at least one individual and an ongoing investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Reports from the authorities indicated that the incident took place close to 2:30 in the afternoon on Tuesday. At this time, a 55-year-old man from Clermont was driving down the northern lanes of U.S. 441 in a Ford van. Simultaneously, a 38-year-old was traveling down the same road’s southern lanes. It is believed that the 38-year-old was riding a motorcycle at the time of the incident, although the make and model of the bike was not included in the initial reports.
The reports stated that the driver of the van reached an intersection between U.S. 441 and another road. At this intersection, a stop sign was positioned to control all traffic. It is not known if the stop sign was a four-way sign or if it was only positioned for vehicles traveling along the northern and southern lanes of U.S. 441. Upon reaching this intersection, the driver of the van decided to turn off of the northern lanes of U.S. 441 and onto the western lanes of the intersecting road. For reasons that are not entirely clear, when the driver of the van did this they did not stop at the sign.
The motorcyclist also reached this same intersection around the same time as the van. It is not clear if they stopped at the stop sign or if they also attempted to pass through the area without stopping. Regardless, as the two vehicles continued on their way the van was suddenly positioned directly before the motorcyclist, who did not have enough time to stop. As a result, the motorcycle collided with the van along its right side, causing the biker to be violently thrown from the vehicle and into the roadway.
It is not known if the biker was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but it is clear that the injuries that they sustained as a result of the accident were extremely severe. They were declared deceased sometime after being rushed to a hospital by an emergency medical crew.
It is not known if any charges are currently pending against the driver of the van.
