Teenager Killed During Head-On Crash with SUV in Sarasota County
Authorities with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating the death of a 19-year-old motorcyclist after they were killed during an auto accident with an SUV on Bee Ridge Road early Wednesday evening.
Preliminary incident reports from members of the Florida Highway Patrol and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office indicate that it was approximately 6:47 p.m. on April 5, 2023, when a 19-year-old man from Sarasota was riding his motorcycle in the eastbound direction of Bee Ridge Road, approaching Shade Avenue. As the motorcyclist pulled up to the intersection of Bee Ridge Road and Shade Avenue, a 76-year-old driver from Sarasota entered the area from the western direction in an SUV and tried to turn left onto Shade Avenue. This maneuver positioned her in the direct path of the teen motorcyclist and the two vehicles were involved in a head-on crash.
The impact from the crash was so forceful that the motorcyclist was ejected from his bike into a crosswalk safety pole while the SUV spun out of control and crashed into another vehicle that was stopped on Shade Avenue.
Sarasota County emergency response teams arrived at the scene of the motorcycle accident and immediately transported the 19-year-old man to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He was sadly unable to survive his injuries and later passed away at the medical facility.
The 76-year-old Sarasota woman sustained minor injuries during the collision. It is unknown if the third driver was harmed during the incident. Accident clean-up crews and detectives closed the intersection for several hours while officials retrieved evidence and workers removed debris left behind from the crash.
This accident remains under investigation. No further information is available at this time.
