Sheriff’s Deputy Charged with DUI After Hillsborough County Crash
A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputy with over a decade of experience has been placed on administrative leave after he was involved in a high-speed motorcycle accident near Bloomingdale Square in Brandon, Florida.
According to initial incident reports filed by local law enforcement agencies last year, it was shortly after midnight on December 9, 2022, when 34-year-old Matthew Archambeau was driving his motorcycle at a high rate of speed close to Bloomingdale Square by Maze Lane. At some point during his travels near the busy shopping plaza, the twelve-year veteran of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office rear-ended a tanker-truck.
The 34-year-old deputy, who currently works in the Department of Patrol Services, was transported to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Upon his arrival, medical staff administered a blood/alcohol test to Archambeau and the toxicology results showed a BAC level over 0.15 – almost twice the legal limit of intoxication for the state of Florida.
Surveillance camera footage recorded right before the collision shows the motorcycle reaching speeds of approximately 105 miles per hour.
No other injuries were reported.
Charges were filed with the State’s Attorney’s Office and Archambeau was put on administrative leave without pay until the conclusion of an investigation by Internal Affairs. He was arrested earlier this week and has been charged with driving under the influence.
“As law enforcement officers, we hold ourselves to a higher standard. The actions of this deputy are not only illegal, but they also betray the community’s trust in us to uphold the law. We take this matter very seriously, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister in a press statement.
