Orlando Motorcyclist Killed in Crash
Members of the Florida Highway Patrol have issued a statement regarding the death of a motorcyclist. The motorcyclist in question, a 17-year-old from Orlando, was killed on Thursday, March 7th, while she was traveling down the western lanes of Fairbanks Avenue.
The story as we know it so far begins at around 7:45 on the evening of March 7th. At this time, the above mentioned motorcyclist was, as we stated, traveling down the western lanes of Fairbanks Avenue. Simultaneously, an SUV was traveling down the eastern lanes of Fairbanks Avenue. Both of the vehicles reached the place where Fairbanks intersects with Adanson Street at around the same time.
The traffic that reaches this intersection is carefully regulated by a stop light that hangs above the merging streets. At the time that the motorcycle and the SUV reached this intersection, the light for the traffic traveling along Fairbanks Avenue was green while the light facing Adanson Street was red. Because of this green, both the SUV and the motorcyclist believed themselves to be in the clear to continue traveling down the road. The only issue is that the driver of the SUV was planning on making a left turn off of Fairbanks and onto Adanson Street. In order to complete this turn, the SUV was compelled to cross over the westbound lanes of Fairbanks.
It is not clear what exactly happened, but based on the events that took place, it seems as though perhaps the driver of the SUV did not notice that there was another vehicle traveling along the road and that this vehicle was directly in their path.
Faced with the sudden incursion of a car in their path, the driver of the motorcycle was not able to react in time. The Florida Highway Patrol’s report states that the motorcycle struck the front right side of the SUV head-on. The force of this collision threw the 17-year-old from the bike and across the road, inflicting severe injuries on her as a result. Despite the fast response of emergency response crews in transporting the motorcyclist to a nearby hospital, the injures that they sustained as a result of the incident were too much for her to overcome. She was declared dead sometime after arriving at the hospital.
It is not known if any charges are currently pending in the case.
