Motorcyclist Suffers Fatal Injuries After Polk County Garage Accident

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on June 16, 2020

It was on the morning of Tuesday, June 9th, that 63-year-old Lakeland resident climbed aboard their motorcycle and began to pull out of their garage. According to reports from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the individual had only recently purchased the motorcycle after having spent many years without driving one. It is not clear when exactly the motorcycle was purchased, and it is also not clear if the 63-year-old had driven the bike after purchasing it or if this was the new owner’s inaugural ride.

What exactly took place remains unclear and the subject of an investigation by the deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. What we do know is that as the 63-year-old was driving out of the garage, something happened to cause them to shoot across the street and strike the curb on the opposite side of the road. At this point, the driver had lost complete control of the motorcycle and was unable to stop it from speeding down a sharp slope on the other side of the curb. While it was traveling down the slope, the motorcycle began to overturn.

As the bike flipped, the rider was thrown from the machine. He was not wearing a helmet, a fact that seems confusing given how long it had been since he had ridden a motorcycle leading up to this point. If he had been wearing a helmet, there is a good chance that the injuries that they suffered would have been less severe.

When he reached the bottom of the slope, the 63-year-old struck a fence with his head. While he was alive when the paramedics and EMTs reached the area, but his wounds were severe. He survived for several days at a hospital, but on Thursday, June 11th, he was pronounced dead.

The investigation is currently focusing on the possibility that a medical issue caused the incident. Other options considered by the deputies include distracted driving, although it is not clear what could have distracted the biker so dramatically as they were pulling out of their garage to cause an accident of this severity.

The incident remains under investigation.
