Motorcyclist Dies in Cocoa Crash with Car
A crash that took place in the city of Cocoa on Wednesday morning claimed the life of one person and caused injuries in another. Reports from the Cocoa Beach Police Department indicated that the motorcycle accident happened sometime close to 9:00 in the morning, along a stretch of U.S. Highway 1 that sits near to Highland Drive. It is believed that only two vehicles were involved in the crash, and that one of these vehicles was a motorcycle. It is not clear if there were any other individuals involved other than the drivers of these two vehicles, although it is likely that if there were additional injuries would have been reported.
What we know about the incident so far all begins near to 9:00 in the morning. At this time, the motorcyclist mentioned above was riding their motorcycle down the southern lanes of U.S. 1. For reasons that were not immediately clear, the investigating authorities seemed to believe that the motorcyclist was traveling at an advanced rate of speed. Usually, when the reports on an incident include a piece of information such as this it means that the person – in this case the motorcyclist – was driving faster than the posted limit, although the wording of the report failed to mention just how much over the posted limit the motorcyclist was traveling.
At the intersection of U.S. 1 and West Highland Drive, an individual driving a car was waiting to cross over the highway. It is not clear if the driver failed to see the motorcyclist or if they believed that there was enough space between themselves and the motorcyclist to cross the lanes of U.S. 1. It is also not clear if this area features a stop light or any other form of traffic control. Unfortunately, both the motorcyclist and the driver of the car reached the intersection at the same time and, also at the same time, decided to try to travel through the intersection.
The trajectories of the two vehicles crossed one another, and the motorcyclist collided with the car while still traveling at close to full speed. Paramedics pronounced the rider of the motorcycle dead at the scene of the accident while the driver of the car was transported to a nearby hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.
