Florida Motorcyclist Killed in High-Speed Collision
A young Winter Haven man was killed in a motorcycle accident early Sunday evening in Orange County just after 6 o’clock when the bike he was riding collided with another vehicle on the road near the Azalea Park area of Orlando.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Graham, 23, was driving his 2003 Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on Colonial Drive at a high rate of speed when Small, 33, was travelling westbound toward him in his 2013 Hyundai sedan. Small maneuvered a left turn at the Amber Road intersection, and in this process, crossed his vehicle into the path of Graham, who then crashed into the passenger’s side of the car, sustaining fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver of the sedan was uninjured.
Investigators are still looking into the cause of the accident. Troopers have stated that Small was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident. Additionally, it is unknown if Graham had been drinking/doing drugs or why he was speeding on his motorcycle in the first place.
Our warmer winter temperatures here in Florida tend to keep motorcyclists on the roads longer than other states around the country, which in turn, has the potential to increase the number of motorcycle accidents that occur. A recent crash report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that Florida has the highest motorcycle accident mortality rate in the United States, with fatal collisions making up 20% of the state’s motor vehicle fatalities. The following list provided by AAA includes the top 5 counties highest number of motorcycle accident deaths:
- Miami-Dade – 67
- Hillsborough – 48
- Broward – 42
- Palm Beach – 34
- Pinellas – 27
