Daytona Beach Bike Week 2016 Fun for Some, Deadly for Others
The Daytona Beach Bike Week in Daytona Beach, Florida is an annual event that many motorcyclists and motorcycle enthusiasts look forward to all year long. The week is full of exciting events, including concerts and races, not to mention the great food and activities hosted by area vendors.
Unfortunately, all of the extra traffic in the area during Bike Week also brings with it some tragedy. There were several motorcycle accidents during the 2016 Bike Week, and also some accidents that were unrelated to motorcycle traffic. The first fatality that occurred this week happened on Sunday evening, March 6th. According to authorities, a pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a motorcycle on North Nova Road.
Later on that week, in the early morning hours of March 11th, a motorcyclist from South Carolina was headed southbound in the middle lane on Nova Road when a nearby vehicle decided to change lanes. The driver of the vehicle claimed that she did not see the motorcycle and she merged directly into the rider, trapping him and his bike underneath her car where he was dragged for 75 feet as both her car and the motorcycle burst into flames. The rider of the motorcycle was pulled from the burning wreckage by witnesses as first responders rushed to the scene. He was airlifted to the Orlando Regional Medical Center with critical injuries.
And a final chilling incident that occurred last week involved a woman driving onto the infield at Daytona Speedway, crashing into several motor homes and injuring four people. The accident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. when the woman got into her Toyota pickup truck to leave the Speedway. The injuries were not life-threatening, but one man suffered a broken leg due to the incident.
