Crash at Orlando Intersection Leaves Motorcyclist Dead
A two-vehicle crash in Orange County this past Monday morning has resulted in the death of at least one person and launched an investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. According to the initial reports surrounding the incident, it was sometime around 6:00 in the morning when a 30-year-old Orlando resident was riding a motorcycle down the eastern lanes of Colonial Drive when he reached the intersection between this road and State Road 417.
The report indicated that this intersection is governed by a stoplight. At the time of day when the motorcycle reached the stoplight, the light facing Colonial Drive featured a flashing yellow signal while the side facing State Road 417 flashed the red signal.
At the same time that the motorcyclist reached the intersection, a 45-year-old Orlando resident driving a 2016 Dodge pickup truck also approached the intersection. The driver of the Dodge was approaching the flashing red light, but for reasons that are not completely clear, they either did not stop at the intersection or they failed to scan the area fully before continuing their way through the street’s crossing.
The pickup truck, which was turning from the northern lanes of State Road 417 onto Colonial Drive, collided with the 2009 Yamaha being driven by the 30-year-old. The impact between the car and the motorcycle was severe, and in the ensuing tangle of heavy metal objects the motorcyclist was thrown from their vehicle and onto the road.
Members of the Florida Highway Patrol as well as EMTs and paramedics working in the Orlando area rushed to the scene to try and offer medical assistance to the people involved. Unfortunately, the degree of damage suffered by the motorcyclist was beyond the ability of any medical crew. Although he was reportedly alive when the emergency teams reached the area, and although he was rushed to Florida Hospital East for advanced emergency medical treatment, he was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after arriving.
The reports did not indicate whether or not the person behind the wheel of the pickup truck suffered any injuries in the incident, and it is also not clear if any charges are currently pending in the case.
