Accident Between Motorcycle and Sedan in New Smyrna Beach Leaves Biker Dead, Charges Pending
An accident that took place on Friday between a sedan and a motorcycle in New Smyrna Beach has had further information added to the already released statement. The initial report indicated that the crash took place on State Road 44, close to where this road crosses I-95. The events as the Florida Highway Patrol has been able to reconstruct them suggest that the sedan’s driver, an unnamed individual, was trying to turn left, off of State Road 44, in order to gain entrance to the onramp for I-95 south.
The sedan’s driver was traveling west on State Road 44, and in order to access the onramp they needed to cross over the eastbound lanes of State Road 44. At the time the driver decided to make the turn, a motorcyclist was traveling down State Road 44’s eastbound lanes. For whatever reason, the sedan’s driver did not see the motorcyclist and collided directly with the bike and its driver. When emergency response teams arrived, they were unable to do anything to assist the mortally injured biker. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The new information updates the previous story so that now we know the name of the biker. He was the 34-year-old Stanley Stern Jr., a resident of New Smyrna Beach, and an individual whose sudden and unexpected death will likely leave a hole in more than a few individual’s lives. As the investigation continued, the eastbound lanes of State Road 44 that stretched west of the overpass of I-95 were shut down to give the authorities complete and uninterrupted access to the scene of the crash. Now, the investigation is mostly complete, although there are still no charges that have been brought against the driver of the sedan. Any charges will remain in limbo until the investigation is deemed finished, an event that rests at an uncertain point along the projected timeline of events.
Accidents between cars and motorcycles occur frequently. Especially in Florida, where our beautiful roadways and coastal vistas attract bikers from around the country. It is imperative for drivers of cars to always be on the lookout for bikers, but there are times, such as the one which took the life of Stanley Stern Jr., when the proper attentiveness is dropped, leading to fatal results.
