Three Hospitalized After Head-On Crash in Lehigh Acres

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on March 28, 2020

Three individuals suffered severe injuries in a car accident that took place on the morning of Thursday, March 26th, along State Road 82. Responding to the crash were members of the Florida Highway Patrol who also conducted the preliminary investigation into the event. What we know so far from their reports is that the accident involved three vehicles, one of which was an unmarked vehicle belonging to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

It was sometime during the morning that a 52-year-old Lehigh Acres individual was driving their vehicle down the western lanes of State Road 82. When they reached a construction zone located within Lehigh Acres, they began to drive behind another vehicle. It appears as though this second vehicle was traveling at a slower rate than the one that the 52-year-old wished to travel, and this caused the 52-year-old to attempt to pass the slower moving vehicle. Due to it being a construction zone, the area where the 52-year-old was attempting to pass was very much one in which passing was not allowed. Nevertheless, the individual chose to attempt the maneuver close to where State Road 82 intersects with Gun Club Road.

As they were passing, they positioned themselves directly in the path of an oncoming vehicle being driven by an 18-year-old from Clearwater. Unable to merge back into their own lane in time, the 52-year-old’s vehicle struck that of the 18-year-old’s head-on. The force of this crash caused the 52-year-old’s car to spin wildly, striking another vehicle as it did so. This third car was being driven by a 53-year-old Fort Myers resident. The third car was also an unmarked car belonging to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. It was not immediately clear whether or not the 53-year-old driving the car is a deputy with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

As a result of the crash, the 18-year-old as well as a 26-year-old passenger within their car suffered serious injuries. The 52-year-old who had attempted to pass in the construction zone also suffered severe injuries. The three were rushed from the site of the crash to Lee Memorial Hospital. It is not known if they remain at the medical center or if they were able to be released following treatment.

The driver of the unmarked Lee County Sheriff’s Office car was not injured in the incident.

Charges are currently pending.
