Orlando police say that two women were recently struck and killed by a sports utility vehicle while they sat at a Lynx bus stop. Police report that the women were waiting for a bus around 10:45 p.m. one recent evening at the bus stop on Silver Star Road near Le Havre Boulevard when they were run over by a 2004 Hyundai driven by a 45-year-old woman, address unknown. Accident investigators say that the driver of the Hyundai was traveling westbound on Silver Star Road when she suddenly swerved and drove into the two victims. Police do not yet know what caused the driver to swerve into and strike the victims.
A spokesperson for the police said that both victims were in their 20s. One was pronounced dead at the accident scene, and the other was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she also died from her injuries. Police report that the driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. They say that they do not yet know if alcohol or drugs were contributing factors to this fatal accident.
"It’s just sad that stuff like this happens," one accident witness said. "I catch the bus to work every day, and I come home around this time, so for something to happen like that it’s really crazy, and it scares me."
Orlando Police have not yet said whether or not they expect to file charges against the driver. However, if their investigation finds that negligence was a contributing factor in this tragic accident, she could be liable for civil penalties such as wrongful death claims in addition to criminal penalties.
When the families of wrongful death victims file claims with the help of an Orlando personal injury lawyer, they do not do so looking to “get even” with the person responsible for causing their loved ones’ deaths. After all, how could any sum of money replace the life of a loved one? In the vast majority of cases, victims seek wrongful death compensation out of necessity. They seek damages to help pay burial and medical expenses, compensate them for the lost income, help ensure that children are provided for, allow spouses to receive damages for loss of companionship and many other damages.
