New Improvements to Orlando Crosswalks

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on September 1, 2015

A new program in Orange County will bring improvements to the areas sidewalks and roads. The county is home to many hazardous areas for walkers and bicyclists, and metro Orlando is one of the most dangerous areas in the nation for pedestrians. Even in areas where there are existing crosswalks, officials say the safety measures are outdated.

Near University of Central Florida, there is a dangerous spot near Alafaya Trail and University Boulevard. A student died here last year after being hit by a car, and students told Channel 2 that they are afraid to walk to class for fear of putting their lives at risk.

There have been 4,700 pedestrian and bicycle accidents in Orange County since 2006. These accidents resulted in 256 fatalities and more than 4,000 injuries.

Now, the county will spend $15 million to improve safety in danger areas. Improvements include a mid-block crosswalk with crossing lights, audible crosswalk signals, ADA compatible crosswalks and sidewalks, and improved lighting. Officials say the improvements will make pedestrians feel safer, and make drivers more aware.

While this is a welcome change to Orlando’s roads, and will hopefully result in an increase in pedestrian deaths, the changes could take time to come into effect, and there are still victims of previous pedestrian accidents.
