Kissimmee Officials Announce new Bridge to reduce Pedestrian Accidents

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on December 11, 2013

Kissimmee officials recently announced that they are going to build a new pedestrian bridge over a particularly busy road in order to make it safer for people who use a nearby bike trail. The bridge will be built at John Young Parkway near Columbia Avenue at the end of the bike trail, where it meets a very busy six-lane highway. The projected cost of the bridge is $8 million, but city officials say that this is a small price to pay to protect lives. Around 40,000 cars travel on this section of John Young Parkway every day. Since one side of the trail ends at this busy road, pedestrians and bicyclists often risk crossing the six lanes of traffic to get to the other side.

Planners say that the bridge will resemble the pedestrian bridge that crosses Semoran Boulevard by Aloma Avenue. Records show that this bridge cost $6 million to build but people need to be on the trail in order to use it. The new bridge will be designed so that anyone can use it, whether they are on the bike trail or not. Officials say that if all goes as planned, the bridge will be finished and ready for use by December 2014. The Florida Department of Transportation is picking up most of the tab for the new bridge but the city of Kissimmee will need to pay $300,000 of the funds.

Orlando pedestrian accident lawyers fully endorse this and other measures that make area roadways safer for bicyclists and pedestrians. While great strides have been made over the last few years to reduce bicycle and pedestrian accidents in central Florida, there is plenty of room for improvement.
