Orlando Police Seek Driver Responsible for Hit-and-Run
On Wednesday morning, children throughout Orange County and the state of Florida were making their way towards their various schools. While it is common for many children to take busses or have their parents drive them, students who live close enough will regularly ride their bikes or walk from their homes. Close to the Orlando Metro West Area, a boy was doing just that: traveling on foot to school. Although many of the specific details about the following incident are either not being released by the police or unknown, it is certain that the boy was somewhere around Robert Trent Drive and South Kirkman Road when he was hit by a passing car.
Witnesses to the scene told the Orlando Fire Department officials that the area where the boy was struck is posted as a 30mph zone but that many of the people driving through the area blatantly disregard that posted limit and instead speed through the area regardless of whether or not children are in sight. It seems that the incident which happened on Wednesday morning was the result of this exact set of circumstances.
The initial report from the Orlando Fire Department did not give many details on the exact position of the boy at the time of the incident, so it is not clear if he was using a crosswalk when he was struck by the car. Paramedics were called immediately to the scene and offered the boy prompt medical assistance. His injuries were slight and the decision was made not to take him to the hospital. It is not known if he resumed his walk to school or if he returned to his home.
The fact that the young boy was not more seriously injured is a remarkable blessing considering the extent of damage that cars can easily inflict upon people’s bodies. Still, the most troubling part of this incident is that, after the car struck the child, it sped away from the scene without bothering to stop to see whether or not the child needed medical attention let alone wait around until the police and fire rescue teams arrived. Because of this, the crash is still under investigation as authorities work to locate and apprehend the individual responsible.
