Florida Construction Worker Killed in High-Rise Accident

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on December 15, 2015

A 29-year-old construction worker was killed Wednesday, December 2nd, when a piece of equipment that was being hoisted in the air broke and fell on him. The man was working on the 37th floor of the Biscayne Beach condo resort in Miami’s Edgewater Neighborhood. Witnesses to the accident report that the man suffered serious injuries from the equipment when it fell and he perished shortly thereafter. Although co-workers rushed to help him, the elevator in the high rise building does not yet operate to the 37th floor and the location is only accessible by stairs.

The construction firm Plaza Construction Group Florida LLC is the contractor currently building the project. They were acquired in 2013 by Chinese Construction America, a wholly owned subsidiary of China State Construction Engineering Corporation. The project began in June of 2014 and is projected to conclude sometime around the end of next year. All company officials have been cooperating fully with the investigation.

This accident is the latest in a rash of construction accidents that have occurred in the last year in Miami. In October, a construction worker in midtown was killed on the job site and two more workers were killed back in January when a wall collapsed on them. Relatives of the man killed December 2nd indicate that this was not the first injury he received while on the job.

Officials are concerned about the recent spike in construction injuries, and have pledged to ensure standards are enforced to protect workers while they are on the job. Construction companies are required by law to submit to periodic inspections by state officials, and must post safety information in addition to properly training workers on safe practices on the job site. Though construction accidents account for only a small percentage of work-related injuries, often they are the most fatal given the nature of the work and the potential for risk in their jobs.
