Orlando Collision Leaves One Dead, Two Injured
This past Saturday, Rodriguez, a 27-year-old Orlando resident was driving his Honda Accord down the westbound lanes of Colonial Drive shortly after 3:00 in the morning. At the same time, an unnamed 20-year-old woman and her unnamed 20-year-old companion were traveling down the eastbound lanes of Colonial Drive. The Florida Highway patrol has issued a statement on the incident that indicates that Rodriguez, who may have been traveling at excessive speeds, approached the intersection of Hastings Street and Colonial Drive just as the unnamed woman, who was behind the wheel of an SUV, was making a left turn onto Hastings Street.
It is not clear whether or not the SUV turned directly in front of the Accord or if either of the two drivers should have had time to avoid the other, but the events as they unfolded saw Rodriguez crash the front of his car into the passenger side of the SUV. The force of the collision caused tremendous damage to both of the vehicles. Emergency response teams were called in and rushed to reach the area where the crash occurred, but even their speed and expertise was not enough for Rodriguez who was pronounced dead before he was able to be taken from the location of the crash. While it is difficult to speculate on the exact reasons behind the young man’s death, the Florida Highway Patrol’s report did mention that he was not wearing a seatbelt when the collision happened.
Paramedics were able to reach the woman in the SUV and her passenger and, although both were badly injured, they were alive when the first responders pulled them from the vehicle. Both individuals were rushed to the Orlando Regional Medical center where the medical staff admitted them into the hospital as having serious injuries. At the time of this writing, it is not clear whether or not either of the two reached a stable condition or if doctors still consider their situation dire.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing as the Florida Highway Patrol seeks to pin down exactly what occurred and who was responsible.
