Dangerous Sinkhole Opens in the Middle of A1A in Flagler County
An investigation is underway into the possibility that the large hole that suddenly appeared along A1A within Flagler County was the result of sinkhole collapsing. While the repair of the street remains underway, traffic that would otherwise have traveled through the area is being directed along alternative routes and roadways.
Reports from deputies with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office suggested that they are not currently certain what exactly caused the hole to open up. That it is a sinkhole seems entirely likely, although the wording of the preliminary reports seems to suggest that it is not guaranteed that it is indeed a sinkhole that caused the roadway to partially collapse, creating an extremely dangerous stretch of road along a street that is usually highly trafficked.
At the time of this writing, it is not believed that any cars were actually present when the sinkhole opened, and it is also not believed that anyone was injured as a result of the sinkhole suddenly appearing. This fact, however, belies the danger of the circumstances, as it is entirely possible that there are additional sink holes underneath A1A that could open up at any moment.
Sinkholes within roadways are particularly hazardous things to encounter. Because we are not usually expecting the road itself to simply vanish or become dangerously uneven, sinkholes can affect us when we are the least prepared. Being surprised while on the road can easily lead to a driver losing control of their vehicle, and if there are other cars around when a driver loses control the stakes suddenly become even steeper.
The A1A sinkhole resulted in the road’s southern lanes to be completely shut down around South 13th Street. The traffic that otherwise intended on passing through the area was rerouted along South Central Avenue, with this having an impact of unknown severity on the many drivers it affected.
The current status of the sinkhole is not exactly clear, although it is believed that the roadway was opened later on the same day. The hope of motorists who travel through the area is that the deputies and county municipal teams will manage to fix the sinkhole effectively and thoroughly so as to prevent any serious injury as a result of a car becoming entangled within the collapsed asphalt.
