Rear-End Crash in Sanford Kills Two from Georgia

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on April 19, 2020

Members of the Florida Highway Patrol apprehended an individual from Sanford who is believed to have been the person behind the wheel of a car involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident that took place within Hamilton County on the night of Monday, April 13th. Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicated that the accident took place sometime during the night and involved two vehicles. Both were traveling down the northern lanes of Interstate 75 within Hamilton County.

One of the vehicles, a Kia Sorento, was being driven by a 28-year-old from Sanford. The second, a Ford F-150, was being driven by a 54-year-old from Tifton, Georgia. With the 54-year-old in the cab of the car was a 64-year-old, also from Tifton, Georgia.

It is not clear what exactly happened, but it appears as though the driver of the Sorento was traveling behind the Ford F-150 and approaching it at a much faster rate of travel. For reasons that are not clear, the driver of the Sorento either failed to see the F-150 or otherwise believed that the two vehicles were not close to one another. This caused the Sorento to collide with the rear of the F-150.

The force of this crash was enough to cause the driver of the pickup to lose control of the vehicle. As he was unable to regain control over the vehicle, the pickup swerved off of the roadway and into a ditch along the shoulder. Upon hitting the ditch, the F-150 rolled over.

The driver of the Sorento fled from the scene of the accident, continuing along the northern lanes of I-75 until they reached a gas station located along Road 6. It was here that they were apprehended by troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol.

It is not clear who notified the authorities about the crash. When the paramedics and EMTs reached the overturned pickup, they did their best to tend to the wounded individuals found within, but the injuries sustained by the pair were extremely severe. Both were declared dead at the scene.

According to the reports, the FHP has reason to believe that alcohol may have played a contributing role in the accident. Confirmation of this remains pending the results of several tests.

The driver of the Sorento is currently facing numerous charges, and it is possible that additional ones will be handed down soon.
