29-Year-Old Arrested on Hit-and-Run Charges in Polk County

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on August 14, 2020

While it is often the case that those behind the wheels of cars involved in hit-and-run accidents manage to escape capture, the family and loved ones of an individual killed in a hit-in-run in Polk County may be able to feel some sort of closure after the person responsible for this death was identified and apprehended by deputies working for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Reports from the deputies involved with the case indicated that the event first took place after a collision that happened on Combee Road.

This incident involved both a pedestrian and a car, and, as is often the case with accidents of this sort, the amount of injuries that the pedestrian sustained were fatal while the person driving the car was left uninjured. Instead of stopping after striking the pedestrian, the driver of the vehicle then sped away from the scene.

While what exactly happened remains unclear and subject to the ongoing investigation, at this time it seems certain that the driver of the car, a 29-year-old Lakeland resident, was traveling down Combee Road when they struck the pedestrian. After being identified and apprehended by the police, this person told the authorities that they believed they had struck a pole and had not stopped to check. Later, the 29-year-old saw or heard reports of the accident and immediately connected it to his own actions on the night in question.

Still, even after the 29-year-old recognized the likelihood that they were the person responsible for the crash, they did not come forward to the authorities. It was only after enough information was compiled by the various people working on the case that the identity of the driver was discovered. Deputies then arrested the person and charged him on numerous counts, including tampering and destroying evidence as well as the more serious charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

The incident remains under investigation with deputies working to fully verify that the 29-year-old was the person responsible for the accident that resulted in the death of the pedestrian. Additional updates to this story are expected as the investigation continues.
