Elderly Pedestrian Killed After Being Struck by Two Cars in Brevard County
Members of the Florida Highway Patrol working within Brevard County were among the first responders to an incident which took place within the early morning of Wednesday, November 13th, and resulted in the death of an individual. What exactly took place remains unclear, although the early reports on the car accident suggest that a 66-year-old individual was at the center of the event.
This individual, a man from Satellite Beach, was on foot and standing inside of a travel lane located at the intersection of Tropical Trail and Pineda Causeway. It was close to 6:00 in the morning when this person began to stand within the intersection. We have yet to hear whether or not the reports stated that the man was trying to cross the road or if they simply walked into the roadway and then stopped short. If the former option, it is not known whether or not the 66-year-old was walking within a crosswalk or if they were attempting to cross the road in and area where no crosswalk is present.
At the same time as the 66-year-old man was standing within the center of the road, two other vehicles that were traveling along the western lanes of Pineda Causeway were headed towards the area. The driver of one of these vehicles, a Land Rover, noticed the pedestrian standing within the road and attempted to avoid striking the elderly pedestrian. The reports from the Florida Highway Patrol’s troopers indicated that after the driver of the Land Rover changed lanes, the 66-year-old also stepped into a different lane. Unfortunately, the lane chosen by the 66-year-old was the same lane being used by the Land Rover.
Although the driver of the Land Rover was able to maneuver away from the pedestrian, after the pedestrian also switched lanes, it was not possible for the driver to change their lane of travel in enough time. The car subsequently stuck the 66-year-old. Behind the Land Rover, a second vehicle also collided with the now badly injured pedestrian. By the time paramedics reached the area, there was nothing more they could do for the 66-year-old man. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The crash remains under investigation. No charges are currently pending against either driver.
