Kissimmee Crash Between Dump Truck and Jeep Results in Fatality
On the morning of Monday, December 2nd, a dump truck carrying a full load of sand was traveling down Osceola Parkway, close to the intersection with Storey Lake Boulevard. It was shortly after 8:00 in the morning, and the 50-year-old driver of the truck was on the job hauling the sand to an unknown location. At this same time, a 22-year-old was behind the wheel of a Jeep SUV, also driving down Osceola Parkway.
Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol stated that the dump truck and the Jeep were traveling in opposite directions, and that when the driver of the Jeep reached the intersection between Osceola Parkway and Storey Lake Boulevard they attempted to turn left, across a lane of traffic, and onto Storey Lake. It is not clear whether or not the intersection is controlled by a stop light or stop signs, or whether the intersection has any sort of safety feature like this in place. It is also not clear if the driver of the Jeep was aware that the dump truck was traveling towards them.
Whether or not the driver of the Jeep and the driver of the dump truck noticed one another before the two vehicles collided is not clear. What we do know is that neither driver was able to avoid the collision once the Jeep was located in front of the much larger truck. The truck and the Jeep struck one another with enough force to cause both drivers to lose control. The 50-year-old driver of the dump truck was not wearing a seat belt and was partially thrown from the vehicle as it began to overturn. When emergency response crews reached the area they quickly ascertained that there was nothing they could do for this individual, and he was declared dead at the scene of the crash.
The driver of the Jeep was also badly injured in the incident, but they were able to be lifted into an ambulance and rushed to a nearby hospital. It is not clear if the injuries they sustained were life-threatening.
The incident remains under investigation.
