According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were at least 235,461 auto accidents recorded in our state in 2010, an average of 640 accidents every day. These accidents claim the lives of around 2,500 Floridians each year and injure tens of thousands more.
One Person Killed, Another Injured in Fatal S.R. 528 Accident in Florida
One man was killed and other seriously injured when the truck they were driving collided with the back of another truck on State Road 528 in Orange County. Florida Highway Patrol accident investigators are still conducting their investigation into the accident but report that the accident involved a U-Haul truck pulling a trailer and a pickup truck that was also hauling a trailer. Officers say that a 22-year-old passenger was killed and the 58-year-old driver of the U-Haul truck was seriously injured because they were following the pickup truck and trailer too closely when the accident occurred.
FWC Claims Excessive Speed and Inexperience Led to Recent Fatal Florida Boating Accident
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officials recently closed their investigation into one of two fatal boating accidents and found that excessive speed and a boater’s inexperience were contributing factors. The 53-year-old victim of one of the accidents died from injuries after being ejected from his watercraft and struck by another during a boating exhibition on Lake Dora. The fatal accident occurred on March 17 during the Classic Raceboat Association’s annual Spring Thunder Regatta. The victim was operating his speedboat when it struck the water at a dangerous angle, throwing him from his vessel. He was struck a few seconds later by a nearby boat and died instantly from his injuries.
Chevrolet Recalls 475,000 Cruze Models for Engine Fire Problems
Chevrolet owner General Motors recently issued a recall for more than 475,000 Chevrolet Cruze automobiles to correct fire problems in the engine compartments of these cars. The voluntary recall affects cars manufactured in the U.S. from September 2010 through May 2012. This is the fifth time that Cruze models have been recalled since their debut two years ago. James O. Cunningham and other Orlando personal injury lawyers are following this recall closely, as engine fires can cause deadly accidents. GM reports that the fire problems are caused by fluids dripping on a plastic shield below the engine. This shield can become quite hot during normal operation and if oil is not cleaned up properly after an oil change or engine top-off, the oil can drip down onto this shield and ignite.
Report Criticizes FHP Troopers’ Actions in Tragic I-75 Accident That Killed Eleven
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) recently issued a report that was sharply critical of Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers’ actions in the aftermath of a deadly chain reaction accident on Interstate 75 in January. Shortly after the accident, troopers were the targets of much criticism for reopening I-75 even though large portions were blanketed with fog and smoke from a nearby wildfire. In the April report, the FDLE criticized troopers directly for how they handled the situation and their judgment for reopening the interstate.
Orlando Launches Campaign to Make Streets Safer for Latinos
As Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Cunningham and other local residents know all too well, our area is the most dangerous metropolitan area in the country for pedestrians, especially Latinos, who make up the vast majority of victims. In an effort to make area roadways safer for everyone, Orlando officials recently launched a new campaign named Best Foot Forward.
Florida Motorcycle Accident Kills One Rider, Injures Another
A recent motorcycle accident in Brooksville has claimed the life of a Largo woman and seriously injured a Clearwater man, according to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) accident investigators. They say that the 72-year-old victim, who was a passenger on the motorcycle and the 75-year-old male owner were going southbound on Highway 41 when their BMW motorcycle was struck by a Lincoln Towncar driven by an 88-year-old Istachatta man. Florida Aviation Accident Claims Lives of Six Family Members
Six members of a Kansas family returning from a vacation in the Bahamas were killed recently when their 2006 Pilatus PC-12 single-engine light aircraft crashed into the Tiger Creek Preserve near Lake Weohyakapka around 12:36 p.m. According to their flight plan, they had stopped to clear customs at St. Lucie County Airport (FPR) at 10:15 a.m. that morning. After clearing customs, they taxied and took off from St. Lucie at 12:05 p.m. en route to their home in Junction City, Kansas.
Florida Wrestler Who Survived Horrific Boating Accident Returns to Competition
Andrew Hudson is a very fortunate young man, but he certainly didn’t think so last July when he was severely injured in a boating accident. The Winter Springs student suffered multiple injuries, including a broken rib, deep lacerations in his left arm that cut a tendon and triceps muscle, a shattered left elbow, spinal fractures and five large gashes across his back. The accident report filed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission said that Hudson was tubing with his brother on the St. Johns River near Fruitland in Putnam County last July when the accident occurred. Their father was driving the boat towing Hudson and his brother in inner tubes when he made some ill-advised maneuvers and turned the boat toward his sons.
Orlando Hosts National Prescription Drug Abuse Conference
A national conference on the growing problem of prescription drug abuse was held recently here in Orlando and included law enforcement officials, legislators, medical professionals and others to shed light on what is now described as an epidemic of abuse. Florida has gained a reputation in recent years as an easy place to score prescription drugs, especially painkillers such as Oxycontin, Vicodin and others. Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham welcomed the increased attention on prescription drug abuse, as he has represented countless people in recent years that have been injured by people under the influence of prescription pharmaceuticals. Florida’s reputation as a “pill mill” where people from all over the country can easily obtain drugs has brought much-needed attention to our state’s problems.
