Swerving Driver Kills Two, Injures Others in Bunnell

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on February 22, 2018

A three-vehicle crash on State Road 100 just west of Bunnell left two dead and four others injured. According to a witness, the accident was put into motion as a female driving a Hyundai Accent proceeded west on ST 100. Meanwhile, a 2000 Chevy S-10 pickup truck, also traveling west and carrying two passengers, was stopped at the intersection of SR 100 and CR 35 waiting to make a left turn onto CR 35. Another pick-up truck, a Silverado with one passenger, was heading east from the other direction.

As the vehicles converged, the Hyundai failed to slow down. Seemingly not seeing the stopped Chevy truck in front of her, the Hyundai slammed into the truck, catapulting it in front of the oncoming Silverado. While airborne, one man was ejected from the Chevy and died instantly, while another who was partially ejected died while being treated by emergency responders. A third man was also ejected from one of the trucks, was found 20 feet into a nearby field and still alive, although seriously injured.

Flagler County Fire Flight and Trauma One transported the three seriously injured patients – two of them as trauma evacuations – to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach. The others were transported to nearby hospitals via ambulance.

As the crash is still being investigated, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) have not said whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved. However, according to one witness, he had seen the Hyundai about three miles before the accident “doing about 50 miles per hour… and swerving”.

If what the witness says is true, then regardless of whether the swerving was caused by alcohol or texting, the driver of the Hyundai was driving recklessly. As a result, she could be held liable for the deaths and injuries of all the victims. Each of the injured victims, along with the surviving family members of the deceased, could seek damages by filing a Florida personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit.
