Trucking Accident Snarls Traffic on I-95 for Hours
Motorists on Interstate 95 were stuck in traffic for a few hours recently when a tractor-trailer flipped onto its side and a passenger car overturned near LPGA Boulevard in Volusia County. Florida Highway Patrol troopers say that the accident occurred around 11:20 a.m. just south of the LPGA Boulevard exit in the northbound lanes of I-95. Although investigators have released few details about the accident, they say that the truck may have swerved to avoid striking something in the roadway and that the passenger car overturned while attempting to avoid striking the truck.
The accident closed all northbound lanes of I-95 while the accident was investigated and debris was cleared from the roadway. Witnesses say that northbound traffic was backed up more than two miles past the U.S. Highway 92 overpass but no serious injuries were reported.
Fortunately, this Florida trucking accident resulted in no serious injuries but many accident victims are not so lucky. One out of eight collisions between tractor-trailers and passenger cars results in fatal injuries for at least one occupant of the passenger car. In fact, 98 percent of all trucking accident fatalities are people in passenger vehicles. Making matters worse, the number of trucking accidents is expected to rise in the coming years, as big rigs transport more and more consumer goods across the country. Due to the weight and momentum of big trucks, survivors of trucking accidents tend to suffer serious or catastrophic injuries that prevent them from working and enjoying their favorite activities and severely impairing their quality of life.
