Train and Car Collide in Ormond Beach

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on March 30, 2017

A collision between a train and a car in Ormond Beach on Saturday morning has members of the Ormond Beach Police Department and Florida East Coast Railroad Police looking into possible explanations. A statement has been released, although it provides little information beyond the barest skeleton of facts relating to the incident which lead to the death of one person and traffic being rerouted through the entire area during the early morning.

So far, the facts of the case that officers released for public consumption are as follows:
Very early on Saturday morning, shortly after 4:30, a Florida East Coast train traveling southward on the tracks collided with a car that was attempting to cross the railroad tracks. It is not clear whether the car was seen before the collision happened and what, if any, procedures were done to attempt to stop the train. It is also not clear whether or not the driver of the vehicle had attempted to weave around the crossing arms or whether there was some sort of malfunction along the track that made it seem as though the tracks were clear to cross.

Emergency response teams arrived shortly after being notified about the incident, but they were unable to do anything to save the individual in the mangled car. The driver was declared dead at the scene. No information about the driver, including age, supposed gender, surviving family members, or city of origin, have been released.

What does seem apparent, given the wording of the Ormond Beach Police Department and the Florida East Coast Railroad Police’s statement is that the driver of the vehicle was not, as far as anyone can tell, deliberately trying to get themselves run over by a train. In other words, this appears to be a complete accident caused by reasons that are still very much under investigation.

Traffic throughout the connected areas was shut down between the time of the accident and 7:30 in the morning. At that time, the investigators believed they had gathered all the necessary information and reopened the roads. As the investigation into this circumstance continues there will be additional updates to this story.
