Publix Announces Bagel Recall for Metal Fragments

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on January 23, 2013

Publix grocery stores in Florida have announced that they are voluntarily recalling Thomas, Sara Lee, Weight Watcher and generic brand bagels due to possible contamination with metal fragments. BBU, Inc., the baking company that manufactured the recalled bagels, issued a voluntary recall after learning about the possibility of metal fragments being found in two packages of the bagels. BBU is citing a potentially faulty metal part as the possible source of the fragments.

The recalled bagels have lock tab bag closures with "Best By" dates "JAN 18" to and including "JAN 27." Publix has issued a statement that says that the following products are affected by the recall:

  • 48121-25319 Thomas Everything Bagels
  • 48121-29208 Thomas Cinnamon Raisin Bagels
  • 48121-27707 Thomas Plain Bagels
  • 48121-24903 Thomas Onion Bagels
  • 48121-25504 Thomas Blueberry Bagels
  • 48121-25321 Thomas Cinnamon Swirl Bagels
  • 41415-35990 Publix Premium Original Bagels
  • 41415-36290 Publix Premium Cinnamon Swirl Bagels
  • 41415-36190 Publix Premium Multigrain Bagels
  • 41415-36090 Publix Premium Onion Bagels
  • 48121-25505 Thomas 100% Wheat Bagels
  • 48121-22615 Thomas Honey Wheat Bagels
  • 48121-21694 Thomas Cranberry Bagels
  • 83791-00002 Weight Watchers Bagels
  • 72945-35068 Sara Lee Honey Wheat Bagels
  • 72945-35066 Sara Lee Plain Bagels
  • 72945-35070 Sara Lee Cinnamon Raisin Bagels
  • 72945-35069 Sara Lee Blueberry Bagels
  • 72945-61003 Sara Lee Everything Bagels

There are no reports of anyone becoming ill or suffering any health problems from the contaminated bagels, but metal fragments can pose a very serious health risk if ingested. They can cause inflammation and possible infection of the gastrointestinal tract, laceration of the lining of the stomach and intestines and other potentially serious health problems. If you or a member of your family has been injured by contaminated food or another type of defective product, you may be entitled to seek damages to help pay medical expenses and compensate you for lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages.
