GE Recalls More Than a Million Dishwashers for Fire Hazard
Appliance manufacturer General Electric has announced that it is recalling more than a million dishwashers due to a fire hazard in the heating element. GE is working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in this recall, which affects at least 1.3 million dishwashers sold under the GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile and Hotpoint brands. GE reports that the heating elements in these appliances can fail and cause fires and has acknowledged that it has received at least seven reports of dishwasher fires with three causing significant property damage.
GE says that the dishwashers affected by the recall were sold across the country from March 2006 through August 2009 for prices ranging from $350 to $850 and came in several different finishes. GE and the CPSC report that people who own GE dishwashers affected by this recall should disconnect them immediately by unplugging them or shutting off the appropriate circuit breaker. People wishing to return a recalled dishwasher are requested to contact GE about receiving a free repair or a rebate toward the purchase of a new dishwasher instead of contacting the store where the dishwasher was purchased.
CPSC chairwoman Inez Tenenbaum urged people to take immediate action if they own one of the recalled appliances.
“My message to consumers is to immediately stop using these recalled dishwashers and disconnect the power supply to the unit,” she said.
