E. coli Contamination Prompts Massive Recall of Snack Foods

A New York snack food manufacturer has announced a massive recall of snack foods due to E. coli contaminations that has sickened at least 27 people in 15 states, hospitalizing three and causing kidney failure in two people. Rich Products Corp., owner and manufacturer of the Farm Rich and Market Day lines of snack foods, has recalled all foods manufactured at its Buffalo, NY, and Waycross, GA, plants with best by dates from Jan. 1, 2013 to Sept. 29, 2014.

The recalled foods include frozen mini snacks such as pizza, mozzarella bites, quesadillas, meatball sandwiches, cheeseburgers, Philly cheese steaks and other foods sold under the Farm Rich and Market Day labels. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began an investigation into the contaminated foods after people started developing food borne illnesses. One of their laboratories tested the food from an ill person’s home and found E. coli O121 in a sample of Farm Rich frozen chicken mini quesadillas. E. coli contamination was also found in Farm Rich and Market Day products in other states as well.
