360000 Discovery Kids Animated Marine Lamp Recalled

A recent recall affected popular children’s lamp due to a defect that causes the lamp to catch fire. This article reports that models of Discovery Kids Animated Marine and Safari Lamps were recalled after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission learned that the lamp’s manufacturer had received nine reports of problems with the lamp. The Discovery Kids Lamp recall occurred on February 9 after reports of at least seven of the lamps catching fire. The fires reportedly caused at least three separate incidents of property damage and smoke inhalation injuries to one child.

The cause of the lamp fires has been traced to a printed circuit board defect that can cause an electrical short. The circuit board is inside the lamp according to the announcement from the CPSC. The recalled lamps have “Discovery Kids” printed on the top left corner of the lamp and are silver with rotating pictures of safari landscapes or marine seascapes. The lamps included in the recall are the Discovery Kids Animated Marine Lamp model number 1627121 and Discovery Kids Animated Safari Lamps with model numbers 1627124 and 1628626.

All lamps included in the recall have an 11-digit batch number that begins with the number 2 on the bottom. Models numbers for the recalled lamps can be found on the bottom of the lamp’s packaging. The recalled lamps were sold by a variety of retailers, including online stores, drug stores, department stores and many other retailers from July 2009 through January 2010. The lamps, manufactured in China, sold for around $10. The CSPC has announced that anyone who has purchased the Discovery Kids Animated Marine and Safari Lamps should unplug them immediately and contact the manufacturer, Innovage LLC, at www.lamprecall.org for a refund.
