An Orlando man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer recently in yet another Central Florida pedestrian accident. The accident occurred around 10:15 a.m. one recent morning on Interstate 4 near Polk Parkway. Florida Highway Patrol troopers say that the 26-year-old victim was standing in the eastbound lanes of I-4 when the 48-year-old driver of the semi saw him and tried to avoid striking the man. After being stuck by the semi, the man was thrown into the next lane, where he was struck by a Ford Fusion and a Ford Focus that were unable to avoid striking the victim. He was pronounced dead from his injuries at the accident scene. Troopers are still investigating the accident but say that charges are pending against the driver of the tractor-trailer.
You don’t have to be an Orlando pedestrian accident lawyer to know that our state and metropolitan area are very dangerous for pedestrians. Florida leads the country in pedestrian accidents every year, and the Orlando area is one of the most dangerous places for pedestrians in the country. In 2010, there were 7,894 pedestrian accidents in our state. The accidents injured 7,290 people and killed 499 more. In 2009, there were 8,248 pedestrian accidents in Florida, which killed 482 people and injured 7,676. While 2010 was an improvement over the previous year, these shocking pedestrian accident statistics illustrate the scope of the problem and the dangers that pedestrians face every day on Florida roadways. Here are the pedestrian accident injury and fatality statistics for Orange County in recent years:
- 2006 – 42 people killed, 551 injured
- 2007 – 40 people killed, 506 injured
- 2008 – 28 people killed, 569 injured
- 2009 – 32 people killed, 523 injured
