Orlando Man’s Father Abused at Palm Grove Nursing Home
We all want to make sure our parents and loved ones are well taken care of. When they are receiving medical care or staying in an assisted living facility, we expect they will receive the highest level of care. They should be treated with love and respect.
That’s not what an Orlando man discovered in October of 2014, according to media reports. He placed his father in a Palm Grove nursing home. His father has diagnosed with dementia and psychosis and needed a high level of care. During several visits, he had noticed bruises on his father and became concerned.
Wanting to learn more, the man placed a hidden camera in his father’s room. He recorded two separate incidents over a period a few weeks. In one incident, his father was struck in the face. In another incident, his father’s feet were stomped and he was kicked.
The man watched the video and was in shock. The caregivers were harming his father. He took the video to police, and 28-year-old Yashika Jones and 35-year-old Rose Blaise were charged with battery of a person more than 65 years old. They face up to three years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. The two were immediately suspended from the facility while the owner of the care facility, Palm Healthcare Management, investigated the incident.
Four other workers at the facility were suspended as a result of the incident. The man just wanted his father taken care and not punched and kicked. He is elderly with a disease and needs to be taken care of.
As the population in United States grows, elder abuse is only going to become more of a concern. More and more people will be under the care of a nursing home or assisted living facility. The National Center on Elder Abuse estimates that just under 10 percent of elder American’s have suffered some form of abuse.
