Punta Gorda Motorcyclist Severely Injured in Crash On U.S. 41
On the morning of Sunday, February 14th, 2016, a motorcyclist was severely injured in a crash involving one other motorist. The accident occurred in Port Charlotte, FL around 10:40 a.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 74-year-old Robert Gurreri of Punta Gorda, Florida was heading southbound in the right lane on U.S. 41 near Cochran Boulevard. At the time that Gurreri approached the intersection on his 2015 Indian motorcycle, 81-year-old Vesta Ferguson’s 2013 Hyundai Elantra had been stopped at a red light in the eastbound turn lane. As Gurreri continued through the green light and crossed over Cochran Boulevard, Ferguson failed to see him and turned right onto U.S. 41. As a result, Gurreri’s motorcycle careened into the right side of her car.
After the impact, Gurreri was thrown into the concrete median from his motorcycle, which continued on to hit another vehicle that was stopped on U.S. 41 in the northbound turn lanes. Gurreri was taken by helicopter to nearby Lee Memorial Hospital for his injuries; fortunately, he had been wearing a helmet at the time he was struck. The driver of the Hyundai was not injured.
Since the incident occurred, Vesta Ferguson has been charged with failure to yield the right of way to approaching traffic from a red turn signal. So far, no additional details have been released as to whether authorities believe any sort of substance, distracted driving or medical disability was involved in Ferguson’s failure to yield.
