Orlando Motorcyclist Killed when Driver Fails to Yield

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on January 30, 2018

A 74-year-old Orlando area man was killed last weekend when his motorcycle crashed into a turning vehicle. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the motorcyclist was riding his Triumph motorcycle south on US Highway 17 near DeLeon Springs during the afternoon.

Traveling in the northbound lanes was an 89-year-old DeLand native, who was making a left turn onto Spring Garden Avenue. The DeLand native made the turn right in the path of the oncoming motorcycle. Upon impact, the motorcyclist was thrown from the bike and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police note that the motorcyclist was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

The Serious Nature of a Motorcycle Accident

As seen in this example, motorcycle accidents are always serious. This is because, unlike a driver of a car, they a motorcycle offers no protection to the driver. As a result, often times a motorcycle accident results in serious injury or death. In fact, according to the latest statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 4,500 people die every year as a result of a motorcycle accident. In other words, a motorcyclist is much more likely to die in a crash than the occupants of a vehicle.

Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

There are a variety of causes that can lead to a motorcycle accident. For example:

  • A crash with a motorcycle and a stationary object
  • Hazardous road conditions (potholes, ice, debris in the lane)
  • A driver fails to see a motorcycle when switching lanes
  • A driver turns into the motorcycle’s path
  • A driver suddenly stops with a motorcycle behind them
