Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on December 2, 2009

Ocala.com reports that a man died in a motorcycle accident involving several motorcycles. Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol say the man was riding in a group of motorcycles traveling north together on Interstate 75 when a chain reaction motorcycle accident occurred just south of mile marker 358. The FHP official said that the motorcycle accident began when a bag fell from one of the motorcycles and landed in the road.

Several motorcyclists in the group swerved to avoid hitting the bag, causing an ejection of two people from their bikes. Officers say a 69-year-old Merritt Island man was one of the people ejected. Emergency responders transported him to Munroe Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries. The other rider was critically injured, and he or she received treatment at Shands at the University of Florida Hospital in Gainesville.

The motorcyclists were members of a group called the Nam-Knights America. One member said the Orlando-based group has around 25 members from the Orlando and Tampa area. He said the group met in Wildwood that morning for a ride to Lake City “just to get away.”

One witness said that he was driving his vehicle in the middle lane of Interstate 75 when he saw what he thought was a motorcycle hitting some debris in the road. He confirmed that a motorcycle swerved, hitting another bike and causing the separation of the riders from their bikes. He claimed that he pulled his vehicle to the right after the accident occurred and had to hit his brakes to avoid driving into the group of motorcyclists.

Motorcycle accidents are far too common on Florida’s streets and highways and many riders die or suffer life-changing injuries every year. In most cases, a car or truck cuts off a motorcycle rider or otherwise fails to respect the rider’s right-of-way. Orlando motorcycle accident attorney James O.
