Miami Beach Condo Tower Explosion Injures Several

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on October 7, 2015

An explosion in a top floor boiler room at the oceanside condominium rocked the surrounded neighbors last Friday, injuring several people. Three construction workers on the new Sunny Isles Beach Condominium complex were either inside or in close proximity to the boiler room when the explosion occurred and sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the blast. Witnesses at the nearby Chateau Beach residences were also injured by falling debris, though none were serious. Many people in the area heard the blast and initially thought it may have been terrorism, but officials have confirmed that it was an accident.

The suspected cause of the explosion was a leak in a gas line leading up to the top floor of the apartment building, though it was not yet confirmed. The gas leak was contained as of late Friday afternoon, but the area was still off limits due to unstable concrete structures hanging from the building. Officials confirm that the gas company had shut down the gas supply to the area the day before to work on another gas leak at a nearby complex. The workers at the construction site were reportedly restarting the boilers after the gas supply was turned back on.

Friday’s accident is not the first time safety at the Sunny Isles complex has been called into question. This past July, a maintenance worker at the nearby Chateau Beach resort was standing on the street outside the Sunny Isles when a hard hat fell from above and struck him in the back of the head. He was left blind in one eye and has brain injuries as a result. The company that owns Sunny Isles and several other resort complexes in the area deferred statements to their insurance representatives.
