One man was killed and other seriously injured when the truck they were driving collided with the back of another truck on State Road 528 in Orange County. Florida Highway Patrol accident investigators are still conducting their investigation into the accident but report that the accident involved a U-Haul truck pulling a trailer and a pickup truck that was also hauling a trailer. Officers say that a 22-year-old passenger was killed and the 58-year-old driver of the U-Haul truck was seriously injured because they were following the pickup truck and trailer too closely when the accident occurred.
Officers report that the U-Haul was tailgating a pickup truck and trailer driven by a 51-year-old Panama City man in the left lane of S.R. 528 when the driver of the U-Haul collided with the trailer. After the collision, the U-Haul driver slammed on the brakes, causing him to swerve to the right and lose control down an embankment. The truck struck several trees on the way down the embankment before coming to a stop on the south side of the roadway. Both victims were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where the passenger was pronounced dead from undisclosed injuries and the driver was taken to the Trauma Center in serious condition. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
At least 2,445 people were killed in Florida automobile accidents in 2010, and tens of thousands suffered injuries serious enough to warrant treatment in an emergency room. Many of these accidents could have been avoided if drivers exercised proper care while operating their vehicles. Drivers who tailgate, drive too fast for conditions, exceed the speed limit, drive while intoxicated, disobey traffic signals and perform other acts of negligence can be held accountable for their actions. For example, no matter how remorseful he may be, the driver of the U-Haul could be liable for damages in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the victim’s family.
