According to officials from the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened when two Pinetta men – 23-year-old Robert Christopher Croft and 20-year-old Jose Ryan Hernandez – left the roadway in a pickup truck, smashed into a tree, turned over and struck a second tree. The vehicle had been headed west on W. Washington Street when it crossed over the eastbound lanes and jumped the shoulder.
Croft was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while Hernandez survived with serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Details were not immediately provided to the press regarding which individual was the driver, and which was the passenger at the time of the crash.
