On Tuesday, around 3:00pm, Daniel Hessburg, a 58-year-old Groveland resident, was driving his car near where Villa City Road and Sunrise Ridge Boulevard intersect, just north of State Road 50. According to a statement released by the Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes, Hessburg was driving northbound along Villa City Road and lost control of his vehicle. As a result, his car, a 2005 Dodge pickup, left the road and struck a tree with the right front of the car. This impact propelled the car forwards where it collided with another tree along the trucks left side. Hessburg, who reports indicate was alone in the car, died at the scene.
Florida Highway Patrol vehicles responded to the incident as soon as they learned of it, and the area was swarmed with numerous Florida Highway Patrol cars, as well as a firetruck. Witnesses to the aftermath say that they could see the white Dodge as it sat in a wooded area, somewhat west of the road along which it was traveling.
At this moment, authorities have given no reason as to why the crash occurred. It is not known whether or not Hessburg was intoxicated, distracted, awake, or if the truck itself malfunctioned, causing him to crash into the trees because of a steering failure or a break issue. As of right now, it has not been reported as to whether or not Hessburg leaves behind any family, and it is not known whether there are any agents acting on Hessburg’s behalf to press charges against anyone who might be responsible for the death of this man.
Accidents such as this one are alarming and mysterious. The unknown variables in this case surpass the known ones, and it leaves the rest of us with a palpable feeling of unease. If this can happen to a man like Hessburg, then it can happen to us as well. Driving is a dangerous necessity in our lives, and each time that we climb behind the wheel of a car or into one of the passenger seats, we are risking our safety. The vast majority of the time, we arrive where we want to go without incident, but, as this accident shows, this is not always the case.
