Florida School Bus Crashes Carrying 27 Children

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on September 29, 2015

When a school bus carrying 27 elementary school children overturned and fell into the water in mid-September, no one was seriously injured. Thanks to three Hillsborough sheriff’s deputies and a heroic 10-year-old safety officer who made headlines with his bravery, all of the students were brought to safety when the bus crashed into a pond off Nine Eagles Drive.

While this was surely a scary situation for the children, it was a lucky day. Unfortunately, not all accidents end so safely. In 2010 there were more than 235,000 car accidents, in Florida, according to A Safer Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Sometimes the accidents are due to driver error and sometimes to outside circumstances.

In this incident the driver has not been cited and does not face charges. District officials were looking at maintenance records for the bus though, a fact more interesting considering that the Hillsborough County school district has one of the oldest fleets of school buses in the state.

Luckily for the children and families involved, everyone was fine. But it could have easily gone another way, reminding us how quickly life can change from one day to the next. If anyone had been seriously injured in the accident, especially if the accident was caused by a defective vehicle, the families of the children would be entitled to compensation and in need of legal assistance.

Attorney James O. Cunningham has been working with car and bus accident victims for more than three decades, providing families comfort and legal expertise in times of need.
