Florida Cyclist Identified in Friday Morning’s Accident
A Tallahassee man was struck while riding his bicycle early Friday morning on North Monroe Street. The victim has been identified as Scott T. Dewert of Tallahassee, Florida. Dewert was riding on the shoulder along North Monroe when a Nissan Murano driven by a 38-year-old female from Tallahassee hit him as she exited a nearby credit union. She struck Dewert, which knocked him off of his back and into the street. Dewert was hit by an oncoming Honda Accord while lying in the street. Dewert was pronounced dead at the scene.
Friday morning’s accident happened at around 4 a.m., which is not long before dawn. Dusk and dawn are two of the most difficult times for visibility, whether you are in a car, on a bike or on foot. The darkness of the land against the contrasting light sky makes it very difficult to see objects which may be in front of you, especially smaller, quickly moving objects.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, although most accident occur during the daytime, accidents that happen at dusk and dawn are usually the result of lighting conditions. This important fact means that motorists who are on the road during these hours of the day need to be especially vigilant for any cyclists or pedestrians who they may share the road with. It has been proven that most pedestrians or cyclists who are involved in a traffic accident involving a full-size vehicle will sustain major injuries as a result.
Though no charges have yet been filed by Florida officials, the tragedy that unfolded Friday morning has already had a huge impact on both the family of the victim and of the other parties involved. One moment’s inattention has left one family with a void they cannot fill and two others with family members who may be dealing with the aftermath of these horrific events for some time to come.
