8-Year-Old Dies after Being Struck by Car in Orlando

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on March 1, 2018

Close to 1:30 in the afternoon of this past Wednesday, a young child riding a bicycle along the road in Orlando was struck and killed by a motorist. The early reports issued in connection with this incident were incredibly scant, most likely out of respect for the family’s privacy as they began to mourn the tragic loss of their child, but the Orlando Police Department did update their initial statement with more details as the case progressed and the family consented to having the facts disseminated.

We know that the child, an 8-year-old who was not named in the initial report but was named in some of the following statements, was on their bike and riding close to East Michigan Street and South Conway Road. The Orlando Police Department said that the child was on their way home from class at Conway Elementary School when the incident occurred.

It is not clear if the child was attempting to cross the road when the collision took place or if they were simply riding near the road, but witnesses to the incident say that the driver of the vehicle was clearly texting as they made their way down the street.

Although this accusation has yet to be confirmed by the police, it does seem as though the driver of the car either did not see the child or believed them to be far enough away from their vehicle.

After the collision, 9-1-1 was called and emergency response teams rushed to the area to try and help the severely injured child. Sadly, there was nothing that could be done, and the child was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the car that struck the child did not attempt to flee the scene, a fact which will make any case that may emerge against them far less severe. Instead, the driver remained at the scene while the police and paramedics arrived and assisted with the initial phases of the investigation.

It is likely that as the the Orlando Police Department’s investigation continues that we will learn of specific charges that have been brought against the driver of the car.
