Palm Beach Intersection May Get Worse
The intersection of Andrew Redding and Lantana Road was the site of 42 accidents in 2014. Those the number of accident is down this year to just 11, but that number may increase sharply in the coming months. The intersection is very close to the location of the old Holley State Hospital, which was purchased by a developer and is now being converted into the Water Tower Commons.
The new development will be a mix of commercial and residential units and will most likely increase the amount of traffic in the around.
Many area residents already feel that Lantana Road is currently too crowded. Area schools and the proximity to I-95 contribute to the amount of traffic along this stretch. But the influx of vehicles that would go along with the new residential development may push area roads to the breaking point. City officials may look at adding an additional controlled intersection once the development is further along, but no concrete plans have been laid, for now.
Along with the increase in traffic, will most likely come an increase in traffic accidents. Types of accidents that were most frequent in 2014 were rear-end collisions. At intersection controlled by traffic signals, these accidents are fairly common. Though many of these were incidents that involved minor damage and injuries, the potential for serious injury is still present.
Though no analysis has been done as to the cause of these accidents, popular opinion is that distracted driving is a major contributor. Cell phones and other media are often cited as the number one cause of traffic accidents that involve distracted driving. Other distractions include fatigue, construction zones, bicyclists, pedestrians, and any other activities the driver may engage in behind the wheel such as eating or applying makeup. Though it may sound absurd, drivers place more importance on answering a call or eating a cheeseburger than they do their own safety – without realizing they may be taking their lives and the lives of others into their own hands.
