Man Killed in Wrong Way Accident

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on February 10, 2010

The Orlando Sentinel reports that a man died when attempting to avoid a head-on collision with a truck driving the wrong way. The 40-year-old DeLand victim was driving his 1998 Nissan SUV westbound on State Road 44 when he saw a Ford truck coming toward him on the wrong side of the curved road. Florida Highway Patrol officials say that the truck was traveling east in the westbound lanes, and when the vehicles entered the curve, the Nissan’s driver swerved to avoid hitting the truck head-on.

The Ford truck, driven by a 19-year-old man, also veered to avoid the collision and struck the left side of the Nissan causing it to spin out of control and crash. FHP officials say that Nissan’s driver died at the scene from his injuries. The driver of the Ford truck was also from DeLand. He was taken to Halifax Hospital for treatment of minor injuries from the auto accident. At the time the article was published, the FHP did not yet know why the driver of the truck was driving in the wrong lane, or if he was driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Charges in connection with the auto accident are pending.
