Four Dead in Florida Head-On Collision on State Road 50

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on December 23, 2014

Four people have died as a result of a head-on collision on State Road 50 late Sunday evening. A 1997 GMC SUV driven by an unidentified 32-year-old male was travelling westbound in the eastbound lane, according to Florida Highway Patrol, when it collided with a 1999 Honda driven by 22-year-old Cameron Greene of Cocoa, FL.

In the passenger seat was 20-year-old Paige Altman and in the back seat, their 2-year-old daughter Kyleigh. Both drivers of the vehicles died at the scene. Ms. Altman was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she later died of her injuries. Kyleigh was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, where she also died.

It is unclear at this point why the SUV was travelling the wrong way in the eastbound lane, and Florida Law Enforcement continues to investigate the incident at this time. It is known that all of the passengers in the 1999 Honda were wearing their seatbelts and the child was strapped in a child safety seat. The driver of the SUV was not wearing a seat belt, and police are waiting for the results of a post-mortem toxicology test. He has not been identified pending notification of his relatives.

Sadly, these deaths will most likely not be the last on Florida roads in 2014. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will report approximately 2000 driving-related deaths this year, many of those a result of DUI, speeding or distracted driving. Many of these deaths were preventable, as they were the end results of poor or impaired driver judgment.

Florida Law Enforcement encourages us to make good choices while driving, remain calm and in control, and to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We can help our loved ones by offering a ride home, setting a good example, and always buckling up. By doing these simple things, we can make sure our friends and family have a safe and happy holiday season.
