Four Corners Crash Injuries Five Children

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on September 29, 2015

A Friday afternoon accident sent five children to the hospital after the van they were riding in hit a truck. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a van driven by a 30-year-old Orlando woman was southbound on U.S. Highway 27 around 2:40 pm. The driver had turned her head while she was talking to one of her daughters in the back seat, and when she turned around she saw a truck stopped in front of her.

The woman attempted to swerve left to miss the truck, but still hit the truck’s driver side rear with the front right side of her vehicle. The sliding door of the van was ripped off and two of the children were partially ejected from the vehicle. The children, ages 5 and 2, were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. The other three children ages 9, 7 and 5 months, were also taken to nearby hospitals with minor injuries.

According to the driver’s own account, she was distracted in the moments leading up to the accident. However, it was not in the usual way we think about distractions. Many times when distracted driving is publicized in the media, cell phone usage – particularly texting while driving – is the primary target behavior. But this woman was driving with a car full of kids, which is something many people do every day.

While it can be very difficult to control the behavior of little ones, it is completely under the control of the driver and any adult passengers to ensure that children are belted in while they are in the vehicle. In Friday’s crash it is apparent that not all of the children were belted in properly. If these children had been in their seat belts, it is likely that their injuries would not have been as severe.
