Fort Lauderdale Driver Identified in Friday’s Crash
The driver of a Cadillac SUV involved in Friday crash into a dry cleaner’s store has been identified. The driver is listed as John Powell Jr., of Fort Lauderdale. Powell is 85 years old. It is unclear at this time if the incident is related to a medical condition Mr. Powell may have had. Powell was ticketed for failure to use due care while operating a vehicle.
Video of the incident has been released, and it shows Powell’s sport utility vehicle climbing a curb and crossing the pedestrian sidewalk and crashing into the front window of DryClean USA.
Seven people, including Powell, were transported to Broward County Hospital for minor injuries. An eighth person was also taken to the hospital, possibly for heat-related symptoms. Businesses nearby were evacuated due to a gas pipe that ruptured as a result of the incident, until repairs could be made.
The cause of this accident is unknown at this time, but may have been due to several factors such as the age of the driver, medical health, vehicle malfunction or simple human error. A 2013 study by the Stanford School of Law estimates that up to 90% of all vehicle accidents involve some degree of human error. The outcome may involve only minor injuries, as was the case in Friday’s accident. Or it may result in severe injury or even loss of life.
For the victims of a serious motor vehicle accident, injuries can have long-lasting physical and emotional impact on their lives. Once the wounds heal, the victim may be left to deal with mounting medical bills and other costs that could not be paid while recovering. If the victim is unable to work, it makes a difficult situation worse. Financial woes may cause the victim to feel overwhelmed and fall into depression.
