In the early morning of Sunday, December 27, 2015, a horrific three-vehicle crash led to the death of one person and the severe injury of three others. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning, at the intersection of Orange Camp Road and Martin Luther King Boulevard in DeLand.
The crash occurred when the driver of a Toyota sedan (which was also carrying a passenger at the time of the accident) failed to stop behind a Chevy Impala occupied by 43-year-old Owen Gray Jr. and his passenger. Gray was waiting at a red light when the driver of the sedan approached, smashing into the vehicle’s rear end. Due to the force of the impact, both the Toyota and the Impala continued out into the intersection, where Gray’s Impala was pushed directly into a GMC truck. As a result, Impala driver Owen Gray Jr. was killed.
In addition to the fatality, the passenger in the Impala as well as the driver and the passenger in the Toyota sedan were severely injured. Emergency personnel on the scene took both The Florida Highway Patrol has not yet released any information on the identities of Gray’s passenger or the two individuals in the Toyota. The status of the GMC truck and its driver have also not been reported.
The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause and details of the crash. They have not yet revealed whether or not they suspect the involvement of alcohol, drugs or distracted driving/texting in the crash, or whether there is a possibility of a vehicle malfunction (and that the Toyota driver attempted to stop). However, due to the severity of the incident, the passengers’ injuries, the damage to the GMC truck and the unnecessary death of Impala driver Owen Gray Jr., charges are pending. The exact nature of the charges has not yet been reported.
